User Research Consulting

As an independent consultant, I’ve conducted a number of research studies for various clients. For each research effort, I was the primary or co-lead on end-to-end research execution, responsible for tasks such as: identifying stakeholders, identifying study objectives, clarifying research questions, assessing appropriate methodology, creating test plans, identifying participants and recruiting criteria, writing discussion guides, handling execution logistics, moderating sessions, analyzing raw data, writing findings reports, presenting findings.

  • Focus: Define buyer personas to inform upcoming buyer-based UX projects.
  • Created personas to understand the different types of unique buyers, their perspectives, and shopping habits.
  • Interviewed both current users and as well as key stakeholders in all three customer support teams (Consumer, VIP Consumer, and Trade) who were highly familiar with different buyer types.
  • Incorporated data from Google Analytics and internal data warehouse reports.
  • Worked closely with the lead product manager to analyze a large amount of data and translate them into a set of key persona descriptions.

Etsy

  • Focus: Understand how personalization and customization fit into the onboarding process for a new Etsy buyer.
  • Conducted remote, screen-sharing interviews with a discussion guide that included participant pre-work and prototype review.
  • Conducted a collaborative data synthesis session with stakeholders.

The New York Times

  • Focus: Understand how heavy readers of the New York Times read the digital version.
  • Conducted remote video-based interviews with US and European users.
  • Troubleshot last-minute challenges regarding technical set-up.

Amway

  • Focus: Understand the workflows and needs for running an Amway business.
  • Conducted an international, on-site ethnography with participants in Japan, Korea, and the United States.
  • Moderated Japanese and Korean interviews through local translators.
  • Project led by Create With Context.

  • Focus: Understand how people manage photos and videos while mobile.
  • Conducted a diary study using Revelation software by FocusVision.
  • Designed a progressive script and actively moderated to minimize drop-out rates.
